Mayank Shekhar Review: Teri Meri Kahaani

Darn, this tedhi medhi Kahaani!

Teri Meri Kahaani

Director: Kunal Kohli
Actors: Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra

When you don’t have one story to tell, I suppose you can tell three, and dish out three completely unrelated romantic movies for the price of two superstars – so there are two period films, and one bubble gum stuff for the urban young here. The audience also gets to pay for only one ticket. The separate settings could simultaneously allow for a soundtrack with a qawali, a twist and jive number and a nightclub song. How’s that for a business proposal. Obviously good, given someone’s pumped in crores here. You can tell why the lead actors would be happy with their parts.

Two of India’s bright young stars can’t possibly get a more extensive showreel for themselves. It seems like both Shahid Kapur and Priyanka Chopra are auditioning for future roles, and they’ve done a fine job. Shahid plays a shy musician in 1960 Bombay, a studious college boy in 2012 England, and a rural Casanova in 1910 Punjab. Priyanka plays a movie-star, a young college kid, and a freedom fighter’s daughter during the same periods. Costume designers can spread their wings.

But what’s this movie really about? Good question. Search me. The hero can’t date a movie-star because her best friend is also interested in him. So? The college kids can’t get together because the boy was dating a girl. But he’s broken up with her now. What’s the problem then? The freedom fighter’s daughter can’t marry the hero since her father wouldn’t allow it to happen. This could be because the boy’s Muslim and the girl Sikh. But the film never mentions that either. When conflicts are so weak, how much can you expect from a story.

But you do know why this film exists in theatres. Those who follow film trade numbers often classify movies as “single screen” and “multiplex”, or “small-town” and “metro”. I guess the most central divide among movie audiences exists between males and females. You can figure this with the Friday of this film’s release. The men would have probably stepped into Gangs Of Wasseypur. For this movie, I am surrounded by young girls at my theatre. I keep turning back to check on what they’re really giggling at. They seem to be having fun. I can barely keep my eyes open. Too bad. There’s no way to get the money back either. Let me rest in this piece of furniture.

  1. Wow- I am sure the film is not worth anyone’s time – but your gender-sterotyping is beyond offensive – do you always act like an illiterate ass Mr Shekhar? or is it something you just do to hide your obvious lack of writing talent?

  2. I say so because me, a woman, went to see Gangs Of Wasseypur, and saw many a moony-eyed male trying to get tickets for Teri meri… perhaps they were standing in line for a gender change operation – according to you – when you critique a film – hell no – when you call yourself a bonafide movie critic, perhaps you would want to have a more unbiased, politically correct point of view – your job is to watch a movie and write drivel about it (and that too, a self-proclaimed one) so please stick to it – and chill out about your so called “observations” about which movie is watched by whom.

  3. mayank, dont u think u are too harsh??its is not that bad..i havnt watched it yet but quite sure that its not lyk how u reviewd…and y u havnt said much about direction, screen play, dialouges n costumes?

  4. Mayank u r spot on,it’s very silly film, where is the screenplay and what’s the connection btwn all the episodes? U r right abt some of the teenage crowd liking some parts of the movie, but overall I don’t think it will do well,@ arunima, mayank is being kind by not saying anything abt the director as the film says it loud and clear….

  5. Audience are not liking it but reviews from almost everywhere every corner are good. My Producer didn’t like the film at all to whom I consider have some sense of movies who also liked all previous films of Anurag. Now Let me check all by myself.

  6. i think mayank is spot on when it comes to reviewing teri meri whatever.i am glad he has not even wasted words on a collossal piece of shhhit.but i have an issue,u can review a film like gow in whichever way u want,as it is worth reviewing, but how on earth does a crappy film like tmk even qualify for a review?chalk and cheese…and as regards gender categorisation.i think tmk has no gender at all, these films r never born.
